Fullwood reflects on Commodore's Townsville debut

Despite the many challenges faced changing cars mid-season, Bryce Fullwood has finished inside the top 10 during the final Dunlop Super2 Series race at Townsville.
The 20-year-old entered the fourth round of the series in Todd Hazelwood’s series-winning 2017 Holden VF Commodore, switching from the Falcon FG-X Falcon he raced the first three rounds in.
Reflecting on the car’s season debut, Fullwood said it was a ‘tough round’ for the team, having only run a few test laps in the car prior to its race event.
“We had a test day planned before this round, which inconveniently it rained for us and I had 20 laps in the car on wets, so that made life very hard,” Fullwood said.

“Coming to Townsville—which is a track I love—having no experience in the car at all really made things tough and with the tyre pool we have in Super2 it meant that we did a few laps in the first practice session for me to get my head around the car, but it also meant we had no tyres to then test on until we put greens on in the second session.
“It was a bit of a shaky start, we’ve had a few issues with the car with braking balance and I think we’re trying to figure out what’s going on  for us at the moment, but that held us back quite a bit.
“I definitely think my experience in the car definitely held us back a little bit at the start of the weekend, but we struggled to tune a few traits out of it, so it was a bit of a tough weekend.
“We managed to come home tenth in the last race, we probably didn’t have a lot of speed, but fortunately we were in the right place at the right time and made some good choices and decisions in the race and we got it up there a little bit.
“I was relatively happy with myself in how I approached the weekend in adapting to the car, a lot of these guys [in Super2] have six months on me in these cars, so I felt as though I got accustomed to the car pretty fast and that was really good.”
The North Territorian racer will now use a break to prepare for the fifth round of the series at Sandown, which coincides with his Virgin Australia Supercars Championship debut as part of the PIRTEK Enduro Cup.
“Fortunately now we have a two month break until the next event and we’ve got a lot of time to do some homework and get things sorted so we come out at Sandown absolutely swinging,” Fullwood added.
“Obviously finishing 10th was a little bit better than where we were at Perth, the last round, so we’re slowly chipping away, we are working extremely hard and it’s absolutely killing us at the moment, but we’ll get to the bottom of it.
“Sandown is going to be a very demanding weekend for me, I’ve never done a session so long in Supercars, I’ve done the Bathurst 12 Hour and stuff like that and have traditionally coped well.
“I’ll be straight in the gym and getting very well prepared … I’m really looking forward to it and cannot wait to sink my teeth in.”
Fullwood will head to Victoria and race at the RABBLE.club Sandown 500 on 14-16 September.

Darwin's only Supercars driver Bryce Fullwood will make his debut in the Aussie Racing Cars on home turf at Hidden Valley Raceway next month.

The 20-year-old will also race in the Commodore Cup category at the same event, presenting double racing duties for the local racer.

Fullwood said he's excited about the opportunity and cannot wait to race in front of the local fans.

"I'm really excited to race an Aussie Car for the first time in front of my home crowd at Darwin, it will be challenging as I haven't driven one before but hopefully I'll go alright," Fullwood said.

"They race so hard and Darwin is known to close the racing up and put on a good show, so I'm pretty keen to sink my teeth into some good and hard racing.

"I'll also be racing my Dad's VH Commodore Cup car, so it'll be pretty busy as the classes are one after another, but it should be a fun weekend."

Fullwood will race Blake Sciberras' Aussie Racing Car, which is run by Western Sydney Motorsport.

The event will run alongside the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, where Fullwood usually competes in the second-tier Supercars category, the Dunlop Super2 Series with Matt Stone Racing.

More recently Fullwood also took part in the Additional Drivers Practice at Winton Motor Raceway as part of the Supercars Championship, finishing a strong 8th in the session driving MSR's Bigmate Racing Falcon.

Hidden Valley Raceway will welcome the Supercars for the CrownBet Darwin Triple Crown in two weeks time, running on 15-17 June.

Teenager Bryce Fullwood has reflected on his weekend at Perth, hailing that the race pace of his Falcon in the Dunlop Super2 Series has improved.

Dubbed as one of the toughest series in Australian motor sport, the 19-year-old originally from Darwin finished as high as third in combined practice, with the highest race result of 11th.

Despite the result this weekend, Fullwood was happy to be making ground with the car.

"After Tassie it was a really hard weekend for us, miraculously we went forward in the championship as we were 10th after that weekend after finishing 15th and 18th," Fullwood said.

"Coming into this weekend we had a test day two weeks ago, which we felt we made some gains with the car, but it's really tough without being at the event.

"At the test day we went forward, and we felt as though it was going to be relevant for us at the event - which is was, we basically halved the gap ... we went from finishing down in the 20s at Tassie and now we're just outside the 10.

"Obviously not where we want to be still, but otherwise a really good weekend."

Fullwood's ex-DJR Team Penske Falcon is the sister car of Matt Stone Racing's Supercars Championship Falcon, which is being driven by Todd Hazelwood.

"I think over in 'main-game' with Todd, they learned a few things with their car and we definitely learned a few things with our car," Fullwood said.

The teenager will now prepare for the fourth round of the series at Townsville's Reid Park circuit, in what Fullwood added he's really looking forward to the challenge,

"I do like the Townsville circuit, street circuits are always great fun and there's heaps of kerbs you hit, which makes it good fun," Fullwood said.

"Hopefully we can go back and do our homework coming into Townsville and get something a little more racy and get ourselves into the top 10."

Fullwood enters his fourth year of the series this season with Matt Stone Racing, thanking the team and his supporters for their continued support.

"I'd firstly like to thank the Matt Stone crew, they've accepted that the car hasn't been where we need it to be so we've done a lot of homework and very fortunate that we've made a big step forward.

"Also a thank you to each of my sponsors for sticking with us, Middy's especially as its our fourth year running with them, as well as Blokes Advice, Accident Repair Management, Clipsal, RACE NT and all of my other proud sponsors."

The team will now prepare for the fourth round of the series, as they head to Queensland for the Watpac Townsville 400 on 6-8 July.

Northern Territory's only Supercars driver Bryce Fullwood has his sights set on gunning for the 2018 Dunlop Super2 Series, despite a frustrating start to the season.

The 19-year-old originally from Darwin finished the Tasmanian round of the series sitting within the top 10, despite the last two rounds presenting bad luck.

Fullwood finished the highest of 8th in combined practice, while coming home 14th for the round at the Symmons Plains circuit.

"It was a tough weekend for us, however the positives for us were that we did have some feedback from the car in the last race ... we have been struggling to get any feedback from the car when we were making big changes and in the last race we did get some direction," Fullwood said.

"Leading into Perth we have some idea of what parts of the car have been holding us back, so we can start working hard between events to get it sorted.

"Despite the circumstances I'm stoked that we are 10th in the championship, I don't feel like we have earned that spot but when other people make mistakes you have to be there to capitalise on them.

"Hopefully at the next round we can move forward and start to climb the championship leaderboard like where I believe we belong."

The teenager will now prepare for the third round of the series at Barbagallo Raceway, in what Fullwood added has been a tough year of great competition.

"The competition in the championship is always tough and this year is no different, it seems like every year it gets harder, but that's why the championship has the pedigree that it does," Fullwood added.

Fullwood enters his fourth year of the series this season and thanked his supporters for their continued support.

"I'd like to thank each and everyone of my sponsors for sticking with us through these testing times, Middy's especially as its our fourth year running with them, as well as Accident Repair Management, Scouts NT, Clipsal, RACE NT and all of my other proud sponsors."

The Middy's Data & Electrical driver will race at Perth's Barbagallo Raceway on 4-6 May, as part of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championships' Perth SuperSprint event.
